We get it. You might not know the difference between a steer and a heifer, and you definitely haven’t used the word “livestock” in a sentence recently. But hear us out: the Bishop FFA Auction is worth your time—and def your money.
Every summer, the students of Bishop and Lone Pine FFA Chapter’s (Future Farmers of America) host an auction that’s part fundraiser, part community flex, part social event. It’s got everything: tri-tip, local beer, handmade goods, a live auction, and teenagers in pressed Wranglers who probably have better public speaking skills than you.

But it’s not just about cows and coveralls. It’s about watching our young people work their butts off—raising animals, growing crops, learning business skills—and then selling their efforts to support their future careers, college, or trade school. It’s about community showing up for its own. And yeah, it’s about watching someone drop $1,200 on a pig named “Smokey” and feeling weirdly emotional about it.
The energy is electric. There’s competition. There’s pride. And there’s a whole lot of real—the kind of real you don’t get to see often. These kids have been up at 5am feeding their animals before school for months. They’ve invested time, sweat, and love into what they’re auctioning off. The least you can do is show up, clap, and bid, even if you plan to donate your winnings.
We heard that there were a few kids who did not have their animals bid on last year and we cannot let that happen again. So throw on some boots, bring your wallet, and support the next generation of farmers, ranchers, ag scientists, and business owners. You’ll walk away with a full belly, a new appreciation for rural America—and if you are lucky, a freezer full of bacon.
