Mammoth Lakes Mountain Biking for Beginners

Mammoth Lakes might be best known for skiing and snowboarding, but once the snow melts, the mountain transforms into a two-wheeled playground. From scenic fire roads to flowy singletrack and gnarly downhill lines, Mammoth offers an incredible range of mountain biking experiences—especially for beginners ready to try something new.

Here’s how to get into mountain biking in Mammoth, whether you’re a total newbie or someone transitioning from road cycling or gravel.

Know the Basics

Mountain biking is not as intimidating as it looks—promise. Yes, there’s dirt. Yes, there are rocks. But it’s also one of the most exhilarating, joyful ways to explore the Eastern Sierra. The trick is starting smart.

There are three main styles of mountain biking in Mammoth:

Cross-Country (XC): Long trails, moderate climbs, good for cardio and endurance.

Trail Riding: The most common style—mixed terrain with some climbing and some downhill.

Downhill: Lift-served adrenaline runs at Mammoth Mountain Bike Park. Full face helmet, pads, and big bike required.

Rent or Borrow Before You Buy

You don’t need to drop thousands on a full-suspension bike right away. Mammoth is home to several bike shops that rent modern, well-maintained mountain bikes and gear:

Footloose Sports – Great for high-end trail and e-bike rentals.

ASO Mammoth – Beginner-friendly and super knowledgeable staff.

Mammoth Mountain Bike Park – Rent downhill bikes and gear on-site if you want to take the gondola up for a gravity-powered ride.

Gear Up

At minimum, you’ll need:

• A helmet (standard MTB or full-face for downhill)

• Gloves (your hands will thank you)

• Sturdy shoes (skate-style or hiking shoes work in a pinch)

• Water (hydration pack or bottles)

• A spare tube and multi-tool (if you’re riding outside the park)

Where to Ride as a Beginner

Mammoth has some awesome trails for beginners and early intermediates:

Town Loop: Great for warming up and getting your bearings. Paved in parts with dirt connectors.

Mammoth Rock Trail: Scenic and not too technical, with amazing views of the Sherwins.

Lower Paper Route: Smooth and flowy, a perfect intro to singletrack.

Juniper Trail (from the Bike Park): Ride the gondola and coast down an approachable trail with beautiful views and a fun mix of surfaces.

Build Your Skills

The best way to get better? Practice. But a little coaching helps too.

Trail Etiquette + Safety

• Yield to hikers and uphill riders.

• Don’t skid your tires—it erodes the trail.

• Bring a trail map or use Trailforks or MTB Project.

• Ride within your limits. Walk sections you’re unsure about. No shame.

• And always… pack out what you pack in.

Why It’s Worth It

Mountain biking in Mammoth isn’t just a sport—it’s a new way to see the Sierra. You’ll ride through ancient volcanic rock, high alpine forests, and meadows filled with wildflowers. You’ll work hard, maybe fall, but you’ll smile the entire way.

Last but Not Least #leavenotrace

Please recreate responsibly. Stay on trail, pack out all trash, and avoid picking wildflowers or disturbing wildlife. Respect the land, the people who steward it, and the riders around you.
