From high-desert parades and deep-pit BBQs to lakeside floats and mountain firework shows, this region turns Independence Day into an all-out celebration of small-town spirit, big sky freedom, and good old-fashioned summer vibes. Whether you’re chasing cool temps, classic Americana, or a legit rodeo, here’s your guide to spending the 4th of July across Independence, Bishop, Mammoth, and Bridgeport—Eastside style.
🇺🇸 Independence: Small Town, Big Spirit
Back in the day, we used to kick things off by climbing Independence Peak. But unless you’re a seasoned mountaineer… maybe don’t. Instead, head to Kearsarge Pass via the Onion Valley Trailhead just west of town. Want to keep it light? Gilbert Lake is a perfect lakeside hang. Hike back out by 3 PM and settle in for the town’s classic lineup:
📍 7/4 Schedule – Independence, Ca.
• Morning: 4th of July Parade down Main Street
• Afternoon: Deep Pit BBQ at Dehy Park (515 N Edwards St)
• Sundown: Fireworks Finale at the Independence Airport (Hwy 395 & Airport Rd)
🐟 Bishop: River, BBQ, Fireworks, let’s go!
Or head to Bishop: line up for an amazing small-town parade, float the Owens River all day, and wrap it up with fireworks that’ll make you feel nostalgic in all the right ways.
📍 7/4 Schedule – Bishop, Ca.
• Morning: Bishop 4th of July Parade down Main Street
• Afternoon: Claim your spot at Bishop City Park (688 N Main St). Float the Owens River, grab some BBQ, and soak it all in.
• Evening: Head to Bishop Airport (703 Airport Rd) for one of the best fireworks shows in the Sierra. Show starts around 9 PM—yes, it’s worth the wait.
⛰️ Mammoth: Parade, Art, Beer, BOOM
Seeking cooler temps? Mammoth brings old-school mountain town energy—sometimes you can still ski the holiday, but always: kids, bikes, dogs, parades, flags, and fireworks. Hang lakeside at Crowley for the full show or hit the Village for a drink and mountain vibes.
📍 7/4 Schedule – Mammoth Lakes, Ca.
• Morning: Kick off with the Annual 4th of July Parade at 11 AM, cruising down Main Street from Manzanita to Forest Trail.
• Afternoon: Hit the Arts on the 4th Festival (July 3–6) at Footloose Sports & Minaret Rd. Browse art, shop handmade goods, and sip a cold one at Mammoth Brewing or Distant Brewing.
• Evening: Head to Crowley Lake Fish Camp for the Sky Concert Fireworks Show. Gates open at 6 PM. Fireworks launch at 9:15 PM with over 850+ shells lighting up the Eastern Sierra sky.
🤠 Bridgeport: Rodeo, Lakes, & High Desert Americana
If America had a spirit animal, it might just be the Bridgeport 4th of July Rodeo. This place goes hard for Independence Day—think real cowboys, loud bulls, dusty boots, and one of the most authentic Western experiences in the Sierra. Pair it with a lakeside float at Twin Lakes, an afternoon BBQ, and fireworks that echo through the canyon, and you’ve got a perfect small-town 4th of July.
📍 7/4 Schedule – Bridgeport, CA
• Morning: Parade down Main Street (10 AM), then head to the Bridgeport Rodeo Grounds for the 4th of July Rodeo.
• Afternoon: Cool off at Twin Lakes. Float, fish, or nap in the shade of granite peaks.
• Evening: Fireworks launch from Bridgeport Reservoir.
However you choose to celebrate—whether it’s rodeo grit in Bridgeport, riverside nostalgia in Bishop, mountain vibes in Mammoth, or small-town charm in Independence—the Eastern Sierra delivers a Fourth of July that’s as wild and wonderful as the landscape itself. Pack a cooler, bring your flag, and remember: small towns throw big parties.
And while you’re out there—recreate responsibly. Stay on trails, pack out your trash, respect fire restrictions, and be kind to locals and fellow travelers. Let’s keep the Sierra wild, safe, and welcoming for generations to come. 🇺🇸
