There are dozens of places to stay in Mammoth Lakes. Condos, motels, vacation rentals, ski lodges, and everything in between.
But if you’re asking where we’d actually book, there are really only two choices.
Outbound Mammoth
Outbound Mammoth combines thoughtful design, outdoor gathering spaces, live music, good food, and a laid-back atmosphere that encourages guests to spend time outside their rooms. Between Bar Sierra, Café Crêpe, fire pits, and easy access to Mammoth’s trails and adventures, the property feels less like a hotel and more like a mountain basecamp.
It’s hip without trying too hard, design-forward without feeling pretentious, and our favorite place to stay in Mammoth when the goal is to get outside and soak up the mountain-town vibe.
Limelight Mammoth
Limelight is the polished mountain retreat.
Located in The Village and steps from the Village Gondola, Limelight delivers one of Mammoth’s most refined lodging experiences. Modern rooms, live music, outdoor fire pits, and The Lounge create an atmosphere that feels both elevated and approachable.
The location is hard to beat. Walk to restaurants, bars, shops, and the gondola without ever moving your car. Spend the day skiing, biking, or hiking, then return to craft cocktails, live music, and one of the best social scenes in Mammoth.
For visitors looking for a more upscale Mammoth experience, Limelight is hard to beat.
Other Options
While Outbound and Limelight check every box you might need, here are some back options.
Families & Groups: The Village Lodge
If you’re traveling with kids, friends, or simply want extra space, The Village Lodge is hard to beat. Condo-style accommodations, full kitchens, multiple bedrooms, and direct access to The Village make it one of Mammoth’s most convenient places to stay.
Ski Access: Mammoth Mountain Inn
Located near Main Lodge, Mammoth Mountain Inn remains one of the most convenient options for visitors planning to spend most of their trip on the mountain. Wake up, grab your gear, and start skiing.
Mountain Escape: Tamarack Lodge
Nestled along the shores of Twin Lakes, Tamarack offers a completely different Mammoth experience. Historic cabins, lake views, and immediate access to hiking, paddling, fishing, and cross-country skiing make it one of the most scenic places to stay in town.
Full-Service Hotel: The Westin Monache
Adjacent to The Village and Village Gondola, The Westin offers spacious suites, hotel amenities, and one of the most reliable lodging experiences in Mammoth. If you’re collecting hotel points, this is probably where you’ll end up.
Budget-Friendly Stay: Moderne Hostel
Clean, modern, and surprisingly stylish, Moderne Hostel has become a favorite among climbers, skiers, backpackers, and international travelers looking to maximize adventure while minimizing lodging costs.
Camping Near Mammoth
Some of Mammoth’s best accommodations don’t have walls.
The Mammoth Lakes Basin is home to numerous campgrounds offering easy access to lakes, hiking trails, fishing, and mountain scenery. Popular options include Lake Mary Campground, Twin Lakes Campground, New Shady Rest, and Old Shady Rest.
Just remember that campground reservations can disappear quickly during summer and fall weekends.
At the end of the day, where you stay depends on the type of trip you’re planning. But if you’re asking where we’d personally book, we’re choosing Outbound for its design-forward mountain basecamp vibe or Limelight for its polished experience and unbeatable location.
