Take the Kids to See a Real-Life Steam Engine This 4th of July (And Pretend It’s for Them)

If you’re anywhere near the Eastern Sierra this 4th of July and looking for something to do that doesn’t involve more sunscreen, bounce houses, or melting popsicles—may we suggest… an actual steam locomotive?

The Southern Pacific #18—known locally as the Slim Princess—will be huffing and puffing its way down a short stretch of track at the Eastern California Museum in Independence on July 4th and 5th. No, it doesn’t go far. But yes, it is a massive, fire-breathing piece of history that still runs on steam, whistles included. Your kids will lose their minds. And if you came of age watching The Goonies or Back to the Future III, so might you.

📅 Event Schedule:

Thursday, July 4 – Starts around 1 p.m., after the town parade
Friday, July 5 – Runs from 10 a.m. until the fire dies down
📍 155 N. Grant Street, Independence, CA
💰 Free to attend and donations encouraged to keep the train rolling

This event is hosted by the folks at Carson & Colorado Railway, who keep the Slim Princess alive with sweat, grit, and a whole lot of volunteer hours.
