Independence Peak is a rewarding summits accessible from Onion Valley. Often overshadowed by neighboring Kearsarge Pass and Mt. Gould, this 12,360-foot summit offers expansive views of the Kearsarge Lakes Basin, University Peak, and the rugged crest of the Sierra Nevada. The route follows the popular Kearsarge Pass Trail before leaving the maintained trail and climbing cross-country to the summit through alpine terrain and talus slopes.
While technically straightforward, Independence Peak requires strong fitness, route-finding skills, and comfort traveling at high elevation. If you get off route Independence Peak can quickly become a Class 4 adventure.
